I liked the book because it had a special dark mood. It was emotional, intense and really...... dark, I guess. It really expresses the significance of this guy. Bipolar disorder is not something you can brush off, but if your boyfriend has this issue, or your best friend, of course you think twice before telling someone. You get scared they will take him/her away from you, and treat them like crazy people. But if you know someone who has this problem, tell someone the moment you learn this. You will help them.
This isn't your typical perfect guy who everyone loves. This story goes deeper into the issue than all others I've read. Clayton Reed is different from everyone else. He's quiet, closed off, angry all the time. He snaps at everyone. He's a jerk. He doesn't speak to anyone in the school..... except Maggie.
Maggie is your typical small town girl, with the perfect friends, perfect family, and perfect life. But according to Maggie, its too perfect. When she meets Clay, she instantly thinks he is a jerk. He is nothing but a self centered prick. But she has this connection with him, she wants to know him. To get past his barriers. So she does everything she can to be his friend. When they finally are friends, for a long time, everything is perfect. Peaceful, quiet and nice. But then, they go to this party, her knowing he had a bad experience with alcohol and drugs. (IKR!) But she is sure there will be no problem, because there never is. But, of course, the host's parents were out of town and the alcohol flowed. There is a point were Clay was really drunk and did something that almost costs his life. Thankfully, nothing happened, but this event let questions inside her head that were unavoidable. When he told her what was going on, she thinks she was going to be able to save him. Instead, this secret, because that's what it was, destroyed everything. It led them to something neither of them was ready for.
Clay had deep anger issues, random mood changes, and violent outbursts. It led to the point were no one thought Maggie was safe with him. But stubbornly, she denied it. She was in the dark, and couldn't get out. Even though Clay wasn't hurting her, she was hurting herself. She was in this dark place she bearly got out of. Got to a point where she had to watch what she said to not make him angry. Sigh.
In all honesty, it was a good book. Darker than what I'm used to, but good. I think it teached me something.
I give it a 4.5 stars. :)
I love books and I hope you do too!
